ZootopiaThree new releases, but (as expected) not one of them was able to unseat Zootopia as the box office champ. One of them, in fact, was a massive for-the-ages flop.
Zootopia came in at #1 for the third week in a row, passing $200 million in the process. This is a major, major hit for Disney — and one that boasts excellent reviews. Is this our frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature at next year’s Oscars?
Coming in at #2 was The Divergent Series: Allegiant. The takeaway here is that audiences seem to have grown tired of this series, and understandably so; these are not good films. Divergent opened with $54.6 million, and Insurgent with $52.2 — so there’s no way to see Allegiant’s results as anything other than a disappointment. The last film in the series will arrive next March, but at this point we should expect this franchise to limp to its end.
Miracles from Heaven came in at #3, with a result that is pretty impressive for a faith-based film. Expect word-of-mouth among churchgoers to keep this one in play for a few weeks. 10 Cloverfield Lane slipped two slots to #4 in its second week, though these are still pretty good results for a low-key thriller that received little marketing and whose very premise was shrouded in secrecy. Deadpool, meanwhile, eased two slots to #5. Week after week, the vulgar superhero comedy boasts tiny declines — people really love this movie. Its current total is a huge $340 million.
The next four slots were occupied by familiar titles — London Has Fallen at #6, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot at #7, The Perfect Match at #8, and The Brothers Grimsby at #9, with negligible numbers for those last three. Things at this point in the chart look so grim that The Revenant even managed to slip back into the chart at #10.
But nothing was grimmer than the results for The Bronze. The indie comedy had a disastrous weekend, coming it at #22 and only $386,328 in ticket sales. The per-screen average was an embarrassing $331! No one could have predicted that this would do so poorly. As it stands, the film boasts one of the worst opening weekends of all time, in terms of per-screen average. Yikes.
