Capsule Reviews: Winter 2014 releases

Bad Words

Not funny enough to redeem its detestable lead character nor to justify its preposterous premise, coming across instead as just plain offensive. But I did love the adorable little boy.

Grade: D+

Divergent

Does a fairly interesting job of world-building... but script is so predictable and supporting characters underdeveloped. The Hunger Games this is not.

Grade: C+

Enemy

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a must-see film. Featuring a haunting performance by Jake Gyllenhaal and views of Toronto like you've never seen it before, this is a total mind-fuck of a psychological puzzle.

Grade: A

The Monuments Men

I like it more than most critics seem to, but I agree that its aimless screenplay and underdeveloped characters are major problems. Still, it's an attractive and well-directed film.

Grade: C+

Noah

Thought about this one for a while. There are major flaws and elements that just don't work — but so much ambition and so many things that I find fascinating that I can't dismiss this as an outright failure. I look forward to continuing to ponder this as I rewatch in the future. I still love you, Aronofsky.
