The Martian emerged victorious for the second weekend in a row, holding the #1 spot and confirming its status as a major hit. Right behind it at #2 was Hotel Transylvania 2, the fall’s other big success.
The week’s only new release, Pan, debuted as a huge disappointment at #3. This is a big-budget CGI extravaganza starring famous actors, so the film’s box office returns this week are without question a disaster. The marketing for this film was everywhere, so why did it do so poorly? The wretched reviews can’t have helped — but that doesn’t usually hurt family-friendly films (just look at the massive box office of Home and Minions, both terrible movies), and it’s not like Hotel Transylvania 2 is getting raves from critics. Perhaps audiences are weary of origin stories? Or just of this story in general? There has been no shortage of Peter Pan adaptations in recent years, so maybe it’s a matter of audiences being ready for this character to take a break. In any case, expect this one to drop out of the Top 10 fairly quickly.
At #4, The Intern continues to be a solid success, while Sicario keeps chugging along at #5. The second installment in the Maze Runner series came in at #6 this weekend, and with over $70 million in ticket sales, it’s safe to say that this franchise is a profitable one despite being somewhat more under-the-radar than its superstar YA cousins.
After spending its first week in IMAX-only release, The Walk expanded wide and jumped up to #7. Despite finally making it into the Top 10, it’s still hard to see this as anything other than a disappointment.
Familiar titles make up the rest of the list, with Black Mass coming in at #8. The film will be able to reach $60 million in the next week or two, making it a moderate hit. Everest continued to be a surprising disappointment at #9, while The Visit fell two spots to #10.
In limited release, Steve Jobs had an enormous opening weekend, earning over $500,000 on just four screens. Look for this one to expand over the next few weeks, as strong reviews and deafening Oscar buzz make this one to see.
