Not much to report after a weekend where most cinephiles were occupied with the Oscars and obsessing online about Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio. The winter’s biggest hit continued to rule, while none of the three new releases succeeded in making much of an impression at the box office.
Deadpool held on to its #1 spot for the third week in a row, and it’ll pass $300 million sometime in the next week. Gods of Egypt, coming in at #2, led the way amongst new releases, though its results are surely disappointing. With a reported production budget of $140 million, the film needed to make a hell of a lot more than this in its opening weekend.
At #3, Kung Fu Panda 3 hung in there, with another very small drop. Risen finished the weekend at #4, which is not a very big drop from last week. Perhaps this is a film that can become an under-the-radar word-of-mouth success, taking advantage of Easter season audiences.
Eddie the Eagle took the #5 spot, sure enough making even less than Race did in its first outing last week. Triple 9, meanwhile, did nearly identical business, coming in at #6. Neither film looked particularly interesting, and both ended up being flops.
How to Be Single slipped two slots to #7, and it has now made back its production budget. Has anyone seen this? Is it any good? The Witch dropped four slots to #8, which is slightly concerning. Race fell to #9, and people will surely struggle to remember it by summer. At #10, The Revenant enjoyed its last appearance in the Top 10 (unless the film’s three Oscars inspire more people to check it out next week).
And that’s it. I told you that things were kind of boring this week. Welcome to mid-winter at the movies.
