Box Office Report: ‘Maze Runner’ takes #1 spot from ‘Jumanji’, as ‘Hostiles’ expands successfully

Notes about this weekend’s numbers:

  • Maze Runner: The Death Cure was the lone new wide release this week, and it knocked Jumanji out of the #1 spot it had held for the past three weeks. These are the lowest debut numbers of the trilogy, but not by that much. As far as dystopian YA franchises go, this is no Hunger Games, but it’s making good money.

  • Hostiles, the new Western from Scott Cooper, expanded wide in its sixth weekend and soared to the #3 spot and a $10 million gross. That’s great news, especially coming from a new and unproven distributor like Entertainment Studios.

  • No sign of slowing down for The Greatest Showman, which barely declined and hasn’t left the Top 5 since its debut a month and a half ago. The circus musical is looking likely to match and possibly surpass the $148 million total gross of Les Misérables. What a juggernaut.

  • $58 million and counting for The Post — quite impressive for an adult-oriented drama such as this.

  • Following the announcement of the Oscar nominations, where it leads all films with 13 nominations, The Shape of Water added 1000 screens and jumped up to the #8 slot. It’s a wonderful, crowd-pleasing film that’s also a beautiful tribute to Golden-Age Hollywood aesthetic, so I sure hope it’ll find a big audience now that it’s gone so wide. It deserves to be a giant hit.

  • Paddington 2 is hanging in there, recovering somewhat from its disappointing debut. It’s still trailing its predecessor, but has now handily surpassed the two other films it premiered with.

  • The Indian epic Padmaavat debuted at $10, despite only 326 screens. What a massive result! It more than doubles the per-screen average of any other film in the Top 10.
